Belt gradings will typically occur twice a year in the dojo. Mini tests for stripes (small tests leading up to a belt test) can happen throughout the year between belt gradings. Karateka are not to ask Sensei to grade (this is the traditional way). Sensei will invite you to grade when they feel you are ready.
Advancing to the next level involves showing improvement of your physical ability , skill and technique over time. Progression of a karateka also includes regular attendance, punctuality, attitude, listening, accepting feedback, having patience, being respectful, supporting others in the dojo, and trying your best (dojo etiquette).
Whenever you are grading be prepared to do a comprehensive test of everything you have learned up to the level you are testing for. The requirements listed below are a general guideline and may change.
